 Blog Post 1 - Faucet Assignment


The faucet assignment was a very fun learning process for our first delve into subsurface modeling. It taught a workflow that was very different in comparison to any of the other modeling classes which I had taken previously, such as 230, 320 and 373. 

The first step was to make sure that the units displayed within Maya were accurate to the units which the reference was using. I used the measurement tool in order to make sure that the faucet would be proportionally correct and more accurate to the reference. Afterwards, each piece of the faucet was modeled one at a time, building onto each prior model until I had one fully complete model by the end of the project. 

Each individual piece began with a simple primitive, which usually ended up being the cylinder due to the predominantly cylindrical shape of the faucet. The neck and hose portion of the faucet was blocked out quickly by using the EP curve function and extruding a cylinder along the curve. After the basic shapes of the main faucet were blocked out, I moved on to pieces such as the base, the lever handle and the head of the faucet. 

The main things which I learned from this process was what fencing is, and how to connect two different objects seamlessly without causing very complicated geometry. I had fenced edges in modeling projects prior to this, but due to my lack of usage of the smoothed view, I did not fully understand the importance of fencing edges in order to maintain and define edges within a model. The usage of the multicut tool with orthographic views was also a great piece of information, because it made the connection between two objects much more straightforward and digestible than my previous methods of crossing my fingers and hoping that I would be able to bridge two models with enough subdivisions.
